Casting a Circle

Ingredients:

  • Sea Salt to draw the physical edges of the Circle and Clear Crystal Quartz or associated Candles to hold at each direction w/in the Circle:
  • Green or Brown for North
  • Yellow or White for East
  • Red or Orange for South
  • Blue for West
  • One Main Candle to light to invoke the Goddess, God, Moon, or Sun. (Silver, Gold, White, Yellow)

Gather your supplies and go to a place where you won’t be bothered.

Using the Salt, physically create the Circle visualizing Magickal boundaries being created just outside the Elemental candles, around you on the ground. Give yourself enough room to work comfortably and leave room for crystals (or candles) in each direction, all necessary magical tools, associated candles, gemstones, and Magickal Symbols.

First Create the Physical Circle while Saying these words:
“Goddess (Moon, Guardians, Etc…), bless and cleanse this space so that I may be protected from harm and surrounded by your love and light, and please empower my Magickal abilities. As I will it, so Mote It be.”

Place and Light the candles in each direction while saying the following words (or something similar):

First, go in the direction, of the North. And light the Green or Brown Candle saying:

“Guardians of the North, I call upon you to watch over the rites of The WyldFyre Coven. Powers of endurance and strength, guided by Earth, we ask that you keep watch over us tonight within this circle. Let all who enter the circle under your guidance, do so in perfect love and perfect trust.”

Light the Yellow or White candle in the East from the one u carry and say:

“Guardians of the East, I call upon you, to watch over the rites of The WyldFyre Coven. Powers of knowledge and wisdom, guided by Air, we ask that you keep watch over us tonight within this circle. Let all who enter the circle under your guidance do so in perfect love and perfect trust.”

Move to the South, and light the Red or Orange candle, saying:

“Guardians of the South, I call upon you to watch over the rites of The WyldFyre Coven. Powers of energy and will, guided by Fire, we ask that you keep watch over us tonight within this circle.”

Let all who enter the circle under your guidance do so in perfect love and perfect trust.”

Next circle around to the West, light the Blue candle and say:

“Guardians of the West, I call upon you to watch over the rites of The WyldFyre Coven. Powers of passion and emotion, guided by Water, we ask that you keep watch over us tonight within this circle. Let all who enter the circle under your guidance do so in perfect love and perfect trust.”

If you prefer you can choose to call on the 5th element-spirit or Akasha with a Blue or Violet candle in the center of the circle. Its tool is the cauldron.

Lastly, the most important part of Casting a Circle:
Hold the larger candle that you brought with you to invoke the Goddess, God, Moon, Sun, or any other entity you desire and Using **matches: Light the (white/moon/ yellow/sun/ silver/goddess/, or gold/god) candle while saying the following words, or something similar:

“Ancient Goddess, Mother of us all, I ask your presence in this/my circle. I come to you seeking guidance and protection and ask that you grace my circle with your love and light. My energy flows from me to you and returns once more. I ask that you bless my circle with your presence and help me in all that I do. With love in my heart I ask your presence that you may light the way for me from out of the shadows. Mote it be! Blessed be.”

The circle is cast, and other members of the group can ritually enter the circle. When a person approaches ask:

“How do you enter the circle?”
Others: “In perfect love and perfect trust” or “In the light and love of the Goddess” or whatever response is appropriate to your tradition.”

Interrupting the Circle: At no time during the ritual should anyone exit the circle without performing a ceremonial “cutting.” To do this, hold your wand/athame or other chosen tool in your hand and make a cutting motion across the line of the circle, first to your right and then to your left creating a doorway. When you/they return to the circle, enter it in the same place you exited, and “close” the doorway by reconnecting the line of the circle with the tool.

If your tradition associates various deities with the directions, call upon those Gods or Goddesses in the ways that they expect you to do so.

Clearing the Circle

When the ceremony or rite is complete:

The circle is usually cleared in the same manner in which it was cast but backward (north, west south, and east) in this case. Snuff the candles out. Never blow them out.

First, dismiss the deities or Guardians (or other entities) and thank them for watching over the coven. Say something like:

‘Goddess of the Moon, we thank you for your help with our magickal energies in our magickal work tonight. Please bless our spell as you return to whence you came. To Love and Light. So, Mote, it Be!!’

Release the Element of Spirit 1st if you had called upon the 5th Element.

Return to the center of the circle, and then walk to the northern edge of the circle. Repeat the sign of the pentacle and say:

“Masters of the North, Masters of Earth, we/I thank you for bearing witness and guarding my Circle, and I ask for your blessing as you return whence you came. To Love and Light”.

Return to the center of the circle, and then walk to the western edge of the circle. Repeat the sign of the pentacle and say:

“Masters of the West, Master of Water, we/I thank you for bearing witness and guarding my Circle, and I ask for your blessing as you return whence you came. To Love and Light”.

Return to the center of the circle, and then walk to the southern edge of the circle. Repeat the sign of the pentacle and say:

“Masters of the South, Masters of Fire, I thank you for bearing witness and guarding our/my Circle, and we ask for your blessing as you return whence you came. To Love and Light”.

Return to the center of the circle, and then walk to the Eastern edge of the circle. Repeat the sign of the pentacle and say:

“Masters of the East, Masters of Air, I thank you for bearing witness and guarding our/my Circle, and we ask for your blessing as you return whence you came. To Love and Light”.

Finally, Physically Open the Circle by tracing your wand in the same directions and visualizing the sacred boundary dissipate. Return to the Center and Say:

“The circle is now open but never broken!! So, Mote, it be.”

IT IS OPTIONAL TO INCLUDE THIS NEXT STEP:

Return to the center of the circle. With your chosen tool in both hands, raise it up to the sky and say: “as it is above”, and then touch the tip to the earth saying: “It is below. So, Mote it Be!!”.

*Remember:

If you forget what you mean to say when casting the circle, improvise. Talking to your deities should come from the heart.

If you make a mistake, don’t sweat it. The universe has a pretty good sense of humor, and we mortals are fallible.

This is only the basic framework for ritual, and you can make yours as elaborate as you like.

If your tradition associates various deities with the directions, call upon those gods or goddesses in the ways that they expect you to do so.
